Task types
Manage system and custom task types in TaskFord to categorize, track, and standardize work across boards and projects.
What are task types?
Task types categorize and track the different kinds of work your team does, such as Tasks, Subtasks, and Milestones. They help structure your work so it’s easier to organize, track, and manage different types of activities. Instead of treating every task the same, TaskFord lets you categorize work by purpose, helping teams stay organized, prioritize correctly, and manage projects more efficiently.
For example, developers can track bugs and API integrations, marketers can manage campaigns and copywriting, and operations teams can organize audits or support tickets in the same workspace.
Using task types helps you:
- Understand tasks at a glance
- Keep boards organized
- Filter and report on specific work
- Build workflows that fit each team
- Standardize how work is tracked
TaskFord includes system task types to help you get started quickly. You can also create custom task types to match your team’s specific workflow and operational needs.
How task types appear across views
TaskFord displays task types throughout the platform using unique icons, labels, and visual indicators so teams can quickly identify different kinds of work.
Task types are prominently displayed throughout various views and layouts:
- Kanban view: Tasks appear as visual cards displaying their task type icon. This lets you quickly scan the board, identify work types, and organize columns by categories like Bugs, Milestones, or Feature Requests.
- Table view: Each task appears as a row, with the task type icon shown near the task key. This makes it easier to scan, sort, filter, group, and manage tasks in bulk.
- Gantt view: Task type icons appear alongside tasks on both the task list and the interactive timeline. This helps you understand what kind of work is scheduled and how different tasks, milestones, and dependencies fit into the long-term project plan.
- Schedule view: Task type icons appear on scheduled task blocks. This helps you see what type of work is assigned to each team member across the timeline.
- Task details panel: The task type appears at the top of the task details panel alongside the task title. Each task type includes its own icon and label, making it easy to identify the type of work you are viewing. You can also change the task type directly from the details panel.
- You can only switch between task types available in the current board.
- Tasks cannot be converted into subtasks from the task type selector. Subtasks must be created separately under a parent task.
System task types
These core task types are available in every TaskFord workspace by default.
- Task: A standard piece of work that needs to be completed.
- Subtask: A smaller task connected to a parent task, used to break work into manageable steps.
- Milestone: A key checkpoint, deadline, or major delivery point in a project.

Custom task types allow teams to create specialized work categories that match their own workflows and operational processes. To help you set up quickly, TaskFord provides ready-to-use task type templates across various functional departments such as Epic, Bug, User Story, Billing, Support Ticket, Campaign, etc.
